Essaouira was built in the 18th century under the impulse of the alaouit sultan Mohammed ben Abdallah who desired to build a city able to concur with Agadir.

Its choice was concretised in the building of the harbour Mogador. Consequently, he called for the services of a French engineer, Theodore Cornut for the plans of the new city, who conceived a line city with ramparts. Mohammed was obliged to demand to the European consuls to move to Essaouira. He brought also the kingdom traders who had the biggest fortunes.

It is interesting to remark that Eassaouira was the sole city where the Jewish community is more important than the musulman community.
Nowadays, the magic of Essaouira is relied essentially to its artistic aura. The beauty of the city, the splendid luminosity... so many elements which don’t cease to attire and inspire the artists. Orson Welles turned here the movie ‘Otello’ and Jimmy Hendrix and his band spend their holidays here in the 60s.

There are many pictures and sculptures exposed in the city’s art galleries.
From a few years , Eassaouira became the surfers paradise.
