The ancient
casbah :
Situated on a hill
at 236 m the site of the ancient casbah offer a magnificent
view on the bay of Agadir. In 1450 Mohammed ech Cheikh ordered
the construction of a fortress in order to protect the kingdom
of the Portuguese attacks.
Two centuries later, Moulay Abdallah installed an army of 2
000 soldiers in order to previw an eventual Portuguese invasion.
Unfortunately, the city was entirely destroyed by the seism
of 1960. There are only the ramparts that subsist from that
ancient city, that were partially rebuilt and on the entrance
door we can read an inscription: ‘God bless the king’
in hollandaise, which reminds of the hollandaise counter here
in Agadir in the 17th century.
